Appreciable rise in housing commencements notified to Local Authorities
This fourth edition of our Monthly Housing Activity Report shows that housing construction activity continues to gather momentum, with an appreciable rise in the level of housing commencements notified to Local Authorities during March 2017.
This monthly report draws together the most up-to-date data on residential planning permissions, housing commencements and completions, and social housing output.

The latest available data tells us:
Commencement Notices for 14,192 new homes nationwide were submitted in the 12-month period to end March 2017. This represents a 38% increase in commencement activity year on year. During the month of March 2017, Commencement Notices for 1,685 new homes were lodged. This is the highest monthly return for commencement notices during the past three years.
The level of ESB connections to the National Grid reached 15,327 homes across the country for the 12 month period to end February 2017. This represents a 16% increase year on year. 6,444 of these homes are in the Greater Dublin Area which has seen a 28% increase in ESB connections during this timeframe.
The Social Housing Construction Programme continues to scale up with some 1,600 new housing units added to the programme during Q1 2017. The programme now includes 607 developments yielding 10,072 houses. 130 of these developments yielding 2,378 houses are currently on site.
The Action Plan for Housing and Homelessness includes a comprehensive Five Pillar approach – these pillars are the foundations upon which we will build our plan. They are open to debate, additions and amendments, but for now they will be our starting point for immediate action.
